Risk Management Policy

Risk Management Program

A core value of Sigma Alpha Mu is to ensure the health and wellbeing of each other.

This value is core to the fraternity experience.

Sigma Alpha Mu’s risk management program has been developed in conjunction with Favor & Company, the fraternity’s insurance agent. The Risk Management Program includes various insurance policies. Sigma Alpha Mu has adopted Risk Management Policies to frame the expected behavior and operations of our chapters and members. These include:

Risk Management Policy

Public Relations Policy

Good Samaritan Policy

Policy on Bigotry and Other Forms of Discrimination

Sound policies are core to setting expectations of membership. All chapters are to provide ongoing training and education to their members to help them develop trustworthiness and willpower. A culture of accountability when addressing undesirable behaviors within Sigma Alpha Mu helps chapters and members experience organizational and personal growth. It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the health and wellbeing of each other.

Sigma Alpha Mu and Favor & Company provide educational resources, training, and guides related to chapter and facility management. These materials are available along with copies of current insurance policies and declaration pages in the myΣΑΜ resource center.

Good Samaritan Policy

Known as “Good ΣΑΜ Policy”
Adopted by the Octagon 4/21/18

For Individuals

If a member assists another person in obtaining immediate and appropriate medical care related to the use or consumption of alcohol, drugs, or to another medical emergency, then that member, as well as those who are assisted, will not be subject to individual disciplinary action with respect to the incident. This is the case even if the member who is assisting was a contributing factor to that emergency. An individual may benefit from this policy more than once, though repeated use of the policy may receive stricter scrutiny.

For Chapters

A chapter that seeks immediate and appropriate medical assistance for a person in need related to the use or consumption of alcohol, drugs, or to another medical emergency, may be eligible for mitigation of charges related to violations of organizational policies. To be eligible for this potential mitigation, the chapter will be required to meet in person or by phone with a national staff member or an alumni volunteer designated by the fraternity. A chapter may benefit from this policy more than once, though repeated use of the policy may receive stricter scrutiny.

Policy on Bigotry and Other Forms of Discrimination

I. SCOPE

This policy reaffirms the commitment made to stride towards a future, free of discrimination and bigotry that might be experienced within the single-sex fraternity experience. This policy is not intended to alter our status as a single-sex organization, nor is it intended to conflict with membership policies, such as the Trans-Inclusive Policy, already in existence. This policy shall be upheld by members, volunteers, and staff of the Fraternity, Chapters of the Fraternity, Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity Inc, Sigma Alpha Mu Endowment Fund, Sigma Alpha Mu National
Properties LLC, Sigma Alpha Mu Property Management LLC, and any other entity that is wholly owned by Sigma Alpha Mu Fraternity Inc.

II. POLICY

General: Sigma Alpha Mu is also committing to develop strategies to develop men that are prepared to contribute to contemporary society. No chapter, colony, student, volunteer, staff member, alumnus, or other general representatives shall conduct nor condone any acts of bigotry, hate, and/or discrimination, including but not limited to identities based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, socioeconomic status, ethnicity and/or religion, whether expressed in person or online. Individuals who experience or observe acts of bigotry, that may be associated with the fraternity or its members, are expected to report this to SAM Headquarters immediately.
