The Fraternity

Sigma Alpha Mu was founded in 1909 by eight young men at the City College of New York. Over the years since then, ΣAM has chartered over 120 chapters around the United States and Canada and has initiated over 63,000 members into our brotherhood. Today, the Fraternity has over 50 active chapters and colonies. Headquartered in Indianapolis, IN, the Fraternity employs a staff of nine professionals who manage the day-to-day affairs of the organization. They are overseen by the Octagon (Board of Directors), comprised of eight volunteer leaders. The Octagon is a policy-making board and Consuls are elected to two-year alternating terms at each annual convention.

ΣAM also has an Endowment Fund, whose purpose is to provide financial support to the Fraternity as well as provide financial assistance to chapters and their housing corporations. The Endowment Fund is managed by seven alumni volunteer Trustees.

The Sigma Alpha Mu Foundation is the educational support arm of the Fraternity. It provides scholarships and financial assistance directly to ΣAM members. It’s Board of Directors is comprised of Endowment Fund officers and several volunteer leaders. Each year, the Foundation grants over $115,000 in scholarships to more than 100 fraters.

Sigma Alpha Mu’s mission is to foster the development of collegiate men and our alumni by instilling strong fraternal values, offering social and service opportunities, and teaching leadership skills.  We will continue to attract members of all beliefs who appreciate our great heritage as a fraternity of Jewish men.

Sigma Alpha Mu has always acknowledged with deep appreciation its Jewish heritage and the ethical values of Judaism which have enriched its life and the lives of its members. However, Sigma Alpha Mu welcomes any male student of good moral character who respects the ideals and traditions of the Fraternity.
